Cross-continent collaboration
Walk into London’s Old Shoreditch Station at the moment and you’ll step through a portal into a bizarre world.
Described as a ‘trans-dimensional journey via traditional drawing methods, modern communication methods and deluxe digital printing’, new exhibition The Doorz is a cross-continent collaboration between London-based Will Sweeney and San Francisco-based Matt Furie.
The concept of the exhibition – portals, doorways and borders – was decided by the two illustrators via brainstorming on Skype.
Sweeney says, ‘In terms of inspiration for the show, the main thing would have to be each others work – we’ve wanted to something together for ages. It’s the first time either of us has worked like this – collaborating across continents via e-mail and Skype.’
Working in separate continents, the pair collaborated on a set of prints featuring alien landscapes and surreal monsters in a what they describe as a visual game of Chinese whispers.
The result can be see at the Old Shoreditch Station, 1 Kingsland Road, London E2 and an installation by the pair can also be seen at Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes, 34-36 Kingsland Road, London E2.
