Birmingham marks the millennium

Birmingham is getting in gear to mark the millennium with its own grand design, created by a pair of Charlies. Designers Charlie Hussey and Charlie Sutherland to be precise, from architect practice Sutherland Hussey, plus artist Adam Sutherland, and engineers Tim Macfarlane and Ian MacGillivray from Blyth & Blyth.

The team won a competition organised by publisher Emap Construct to devise a suitable tower for the chosen site, outside the National Exhibition Centre. If a bid for Lottery funding is successful, a 30.5m-tall tower formed of 2000 glass discs should be erected soon.
