The design salaries article, Steady Climb, (DW 10 November) is positive news for the industry, but there are two major factors which contribute to this situation and they are both variables affected by the economic climate.
The overhang from the early-1990s recession, when student recruitment was low, has had a knock-on effect of availability of middleweight to senior designers to the point that design groups are now “gazumping” each other for prime candidates through recruitment agencies. Also, while the economy is booming, clients are screaming for design work and so design groups are desperate to retain their staff with as many incentives as possible, the obvious one being salary packages.
I hope that if harder times befall the industry in the future, the financial commitment being shown to designers is maintained and their true value is continued to be appreciated.
