Opius makes a case for Carlton

London industrial design consultancy Opius has created a new suitcase design. The upright, hard-sided model for luggage supplier Carlton is called Icon.

Icon’s “portrait” format has several advantages, according to Opius director Joss Newberry. It minimises the risk of the suitcase tipping over, and the large wheels and sculpted back enable it to be pulled easily over rough ground and up steps.

Icon features a pull-handle, which folds out from the body in a pivot movement. The handle can be kept short, which saves space and reduces possible damage during transit when folded back, adds Newberry.

He says these combined features aim to help consumers cover huge distances in airports more easily. “We aimed to marry seductive styling with robust, elegant engineering,” he adds.

Opius has reduced the number of parts to increase the speed of manufacturing and sought to extend durability by using entirely snap-fit details. Carlton claims the case exceeds endurance tests as a result.

David Brian, Carlton International director of UK manufacturing and product development, says: “With Icon, our aim is to offer people a well-designed, hardwearing and practical product with a contemporary feel.”

The Icon suitcase range will be available to consumers from the end of November.
