The Duke of Edinburgh is clearly committed to design best practice in all its forms.
Aside from his dedication to the Prince Philip Designer’s Prize, it appears he also thinks deeply about how consumers benefit from good design. In a letter to Design Council chief executive Andrew Summers, the Duke suggested the design of household appliances such as video recorders and heating systems needs improving to make them more user-friendly. Buckingham Palace obviously needs to lose its top-loading Betamax and get a DVD.
