Designers may have to pay more attention to how their creations smell, following research by Sue Woolway of design consultancy Made by Man. Her work is based around how aromas can provide visually impaired people with a sense of place within buildings.
Supermarkets could be first to launch with a system, developed with BOC Gases, which issues food aromas into frozen and chilled food areas. Let’s hope it’s more effective than the real thing – one blind shopper questioned for the research described the smell on walking into a supermarket as like “rotting vegetables”.
