Two new airline idents are clear for take-off

Two airlines are sporting new identities this week either side of the Atlantic. US-based carrier USAir is introducing a new look and name by Luxon Carr, while European airline Virgin Express takes off with an identity by Rodney Fitch Design Consultants.

Luxon Carr’s San Francisco office won the USAir project, although some of the creative work was done in the group’s London studio. Managing director David Rowson says Luxon Carr’s recent identity work for Irish carrier Aer Lingus “gave us the credentials” to win the work.

The new identity introduces a change of name, from USAir to USAirways, with a visual device in the form of a stylised, monochrome version of the stars and stripes. The consultancy is now working on implementation of the identity on to vehicles, frequent flyer literature and other applications.

Rodney Fitch’s work on Virgin Express follows his previous livery work for Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Express is a Brussels-based economy airline bought by the Virgin Group last May.

Rodney Fitch Design Consultants has also worked with Boeing on the design of the interiors of the 737 jets in the Virgin Express fleet.

The identity is featured in white out of red on the aircraft.
